Cocotinos BoutiqueResorts & Spas will be exhibiting in the coming Oceanic Dive &Ecotourism Expo (ODEX) in Brisbane next month! ODEX is a spring consumer andtrade show that is co-hosted with Blue Edge and the 5th annual UnderwaterFestival from 7 to 9 October 2011 in Fortitude Valley, RNA Showgrounds inBrisbane (More info on ODEX). Our BoothNumber is 143, listed as “Cocotinos Boutique Beach Resorts”. James Mamoto... Scuba Instructor! Congratulations!!!

Odyssea Divers :: James Mamoto, one of the pioneer members of Odyssea Divers, could not even swim when he first joined our company and on 5th September, he fulfilled his dream of becoming a Scuba Instructor!

Learning to swim first , progressing to snorkeling and then finally becoming a diver in less than a month, James finally got his break to start his career as a dive guide back in 2004. Through the years, after logging hundreds of dives a year guiding Odyssea and Cocotinos' guests, he became a certified Dive Master in 2009. In 2010, he enrolled in the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC).

Without a doubt, 2011 will be the most memorable year for James. In April, James won the Asian Diver Magazine's "Best-In-Class" Individual Award and 5 months later successfully completed the PADI Instructor Exams (with flying colours!) to become a Scuba Instructor!

James also became the first staff member in our Odyssea Divers' sponsorship program to start from entry level diving to becoming a Scuba Instructor.

We will also see another staff member become a Scuba Instructor this year, stay tuned for our next broadcast!!

Awarded Best Dive Individual at ADEX 2011

Another first for Odyssea Divers! James Mamoto, our Dive Guide from Odyssea Divers, Manado, was awarded the Asia Dive Expo's "Best in Class - Dive Individual" at the recently concluded ADEX 2011 held in Singapore.

James was a member of our opening team back in 2004, spotted while working on the project building of Kima Bajo Resort & Spa - where Odyssea Divers was the first Dive Centre operating within the resort. A native of the Minahasa Highlands, the ocean was one of the last places he had thought of having a career in. The recognition from this award has certainly given him assurance that his choice and all his hard work has really paid off.

"Nariko" (Gentle Child) is a typical lombok outrigger boat but in full fiberglass. She is 14-metre long with a 2-metre beam and powered by twin 40HP Yamaha Outboard Engines. Odyssea Sekotong:: A newly named Dive Site has been added to the list of Sites for West Sekotong! SF Beach is the latest addition and discovered by Miki and Syainal, our managers in Odyssea Divers in Cocotinos Sekotong. The site has actually been dived many times, but just recently, we have decided to name it as a separate sites as the marine life and the underwater terrain is a vast difference from those that are found in the adjacent site.

Latest finds include Wasp Fish, Squad Lobster, Sae Horse and the tiny little Juvenile Frog Fish (please ID Dave!). Special Thanks to Lin Jen Chou (Taiwan, photo credit), Lin Shr Joe (Taiwan, Photo Credit) and Evelyn Chua (Singapore). We look forward to welcoming you to Cocotinos Manado next!

From 2nd to 11th of September, Resorts, including Cocotinos Manado & Sekotong, will be the venue where participants of the AustralAsia Challenge will stay and dive with taking photos or video and submitting their best in various categories to the challenge for the judges to pick the winners! :: William Tan - Singapore ::

William Tan has been fascinated with the creatures of the sea since childhood. While studying at the Johns Hopkins University (USA), much of his spare time was spent gazing at the extensive marine collection of the National Aquarium in Baltimore. A violinist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, William earned his scuba diving certification in 1994.

Thereafter, without his prized antique Italian violin, he travels extensively between concert seasons throughout the Pacific region photographing marine life for tourism organizations, dive magazines and resorts.

His most recent book, Gorontalo: Hidden Paradise, published under the commission of the Indonesian government, is a collaboration with Hong Kong's leading underwater photographers Stephen Wong and Takako Uno.

Odyssea, Lombok :: We have been asked often one of the most common questions ever since we started our operations in tandem with our newest Cocotinos resort in West Sekotong, Lombok.

"What can we see diving there?"

After weeks of diving and having many old buddies and new ones come to Lombok to visit us and help "research" the known sites as well as explore new ones and we are very pleased with the results. Either the experience of diving and operating in Manado has given us a keener eye in spotting macro or is it just that we are lucky? You can be the judge.

Please visit our West Sekotong dive site information page on our website. The top banner sliding images are shots taken while diving our sites in West Sekotong. For more images, Dave Harasti's site is one of the more complete collection and uploaded for public viewing . Dave has also written an article which will be featured in a few magazines.

A few known sites were taken out from a map that we could find and 4 new ones were added. There is no dive sites map on our web pages, so if you want to see OUR dive sites map (not just any map), you will have to come and dive with us.

The star site to mention would be "Will's Beach" which is a site discovered by us and we named it after a Dave's son, William. After Dave left Lombok, Ronni (our dive guide from Manado) found a sea horse which Dave was very sure that we will have it at our sites and just last week, Drew found the Mimic Octopus (Edit: Another Find of a Rare Frog Fish which is said to be an undescribed species by a Frog Fish Guru). Both were found in Will's beach and photos to prove!

We look forward to welcoming our regulars to dive with us in Lombok and certainly look forward to meeting new divers and show them how diving with Odyssea is different.

Mr. T.M. Wong, the owner of Cocotinos Boutique Resorts and Odyssea Divers with his management team welcomed Mr Iwan Sitompul to head Cocotinos' new 28-room boutique beach resort perched upon a 350-meter white sandy beach overlooking the Gili Nanggu and Gili Tangkung in the south-west of Lombok Island with an extensive spa, scuba dive and water sports facilities.

Born in Bangka Island, Iwan began his career in 1974 a cashier at UTA French Airlines Jakarta at early young age. Four years after, Iwan was promoted to District Manager in UTA’s branch office in Balikpapan. Whilst in Balikpapan, he was instrumental in the tourism development of that area while undertaking a successful career in being the advisor to board of directors of 3 oil service companies and later heading the Formalities Department of American’s Bechtel International Balikpapan Oil Refinery Expansion Project and Bontang LNG Refinery Expansion Project, in charge of the formalities of 2,400 foreign employees.

He joined Heritage International Hotel Management and Consultants in Singapore in l987 as Co-owner and Executive Director in charge of sales and strategic marketing where he had been involved in number of consultancies of boutique hotels in Thailand and Malaysia. Iwan’s portfolios include launching and marketing of Puri Kamandalu Resort in Ubud and the Marante Hotel in Toraja to international market; representing Griyawisata Hotels Group (Hotel Tiara Medan, Bali Hotel Respati, Besakih and Puri Dalem, Hotel Bintang Jakarta); representing and marketing Hotel Kartika Plaza Jakarta, Marante Highland Resort Toraja and Kamandalu Resort Bali for Singapore and Malaysian markets.

Iwan has been resident of Bali since 1999 and ever since involved in several unique boutique hotels in Bali and Lombok as sales & marketing executive consultant. He successfully coordinated and spearheaded the promotion and launching of resorts i.e., Champlung Sari, Vila Lumbung, The Payogan, The Viceroy Bali and the pioneer of putting Vila Ombak and Gili Trawangan as Lombok’s high profile boutique hotel and prime destination respectively. Iwan travelled extensively around the world to represent all the hotels under his consultancies in the major worldwide trade exchanges.

Prior to his latest assignment as General Manager of Cocotinos Sekotong Lombok, he was consultant for South East Asia of K-Hotels head-quartered in Beverly Hills, California, USA and also involved in the development of tourism marketing and branding of Flores.

With his new assignment, Iwan is back in his favourite occupation and his extensive sales contacts and network in local, regional and international market circles will ensure marketing success of Cocotinos, Boutique Beach Resorts.

Cocotinos Manado :: A week with William Tan

Widely recognised as a master of underwater macro photography, William Tan is a violinist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and accomplished marine life photographer. Between concert seasons, he spends his time studying and photographing marine animals throughout the Asia Pacific region. His patience and determination has resulted in many rare images such as his sequence of a male jaw fish releasing its brood of hatching eggs into the sea. Catching the extremely shy fish at the moment it is releasing its hatching eggs is quite an accomplishment.

William Tan has been fascinated with the creatures of the sea since childhood. While studying at the Johns Hopkins University (USA), much of his spare time was spent gazing at the extensive marine collection of the National Aquarium in Baltimore. A violinist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, William earned his scuba diving certification in 1994.

Thereafter, without his prized antique Italian violin, he travels extensively between concert seasons throughout the Pacific region photographing marine life for tourism organizations, dive magazines and resorts.

His most recent book, Gorontalo: Hidden Paradise, published under the commission of the Indonesian government, is a collaboration with Hong Kong's leading underwater photographers Stephen Wong and Takako Uno.

Last weekend was a weekend of meeting new friends and catching up with old friends. Beached Pilot Whale

Just at Sunrise on 21st Feb 2010, we were all surprised to find a lost pilot whale on our beach. Fortunately, it was still high tide and it us close to 3 hours before we were able to guide the whale back to the deep. Syainal and James had the greatest pleasure of snorkeling with the whale for a while just before it swam away into the deep.
